The Realists

Some men, as when the winter nears,
will turn to take the narrow view,
no more reprise their sometime fears,

will speak at ease of how the body wears,
be less inclined to seek what's new;
Some men, as when the winter nears,

will think to qualify the fickle years,
hold no regrets that promised futures flew,
no more reprise their sometime fears.

Lighter, now, the bent shoulder bears
that much heavier load they knew.
Some men, as when the winter nears,

find time, that steals away all tears,
will guarantee at least these remnant few
no more reprise their sometime fears.

With age, a certain helpful wit appears
to temper hearts that rage at payment due.
Some men, as when the winter nears,
no more reprise their sometime fears.
