Psalm 106                                              Saturday Readings 2, Seasonal

Hallelu-Yah!

Give thanks to Yahweh for he is good, * for eternal is his kindness.

Who can express Yahweh's might, * or sound all his praise?

Blest are those conscious of justice, * the one who acts rightly at all times!

Think of me, Yahweh, * with your strong support; * visit me with your saving help,

that I may enjoy the prosperity of your chosen, * rejoice in the joy of your nation, * glory in your patrimony.

We have sinned like our fathers; * we have done wrong, committed crimes.

After Egypt our fathers * did not consider your wonders, * did not remember your abounding kindness.

From the Reed Sea they defied the Most High, * though he saved them because of his name, * to make known his might.

He rebuked the Sea; * the Reeds he dried up; * he marched them through the deep as through a desert.

He saved them from the hand of the enemy, * and freed them from the hand of the foe.

The waters covered their adversaries, * not one of whom survived.

Then they believed his words, * and sang his praise.

But they quickly forgot his works, * and did not wait for his advice.

They complained bitterly in the desert, * and tested El in the barrens.

Yet he gave them what they requested, * and banished starvation from their throats.

They envied Moses in the camp, * and Aaron the holy one of Yahweh.

The earth opened up * and swallowed Dathan; * it covered the faction of Abiram.

Fire blazed against their faction; * flames devoured the wicked.

They made a young bull at Horeb, * and worshiped a molten image.

They bartered their religion * for the figure of a grass-eating bull.

They forgot El their Savior, * who had worked great deeds in Egypt,

wonders in the land of Ham, * awesome happenings near the Reed Sea.

Then he decided to exterminate them, * were it not for Moses his chosen,

who stood in the breach before him * to keep his fury from ravaging them.

Then they rejected the coveted land; * they did not believe his word.

They grumbled in their tents, * heeded not the voice of Yahweh.

So he raised his hand against them * to fell them in the desert,

to cast their offspring among the nations, * and disperse them throughout the lands.

They yoked themselves to Baal Peor, * and ate banquets of the dead.

They so angered him by their doings * that a plague erupted among them.

Then Phinehas stood up and interceded, * and the plague was checked.

This was credited to his virtue, * from generation to generation, forever.

They infuriated him at the waters of Meribah, * so that Moses fared ill on their account,

because they defied his spirit, * and he spoke rashly with his lips.

They did not exterminate the peoples * as Yahweh had commanded them,

but intermarried with the nations * and learned their customs.

They served their idols * which became a lure for them.

They sacrificed their sons * and their daughters to demons.

They shed innocent blood, * the blood of their sons and daughters,

whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, * and they desecrated the land with torrents of blood.

They defiled themselves by their actions, * and fornicated in their doings.

Then Yahweh's anger was kindled against his people, * and he abhorred his patrimony.

    He put them into the hand of the nations, * so that their enemies ruled over them;

their foes oppressed them; * they were humbled under their hand.

Many times he rescued them, * but they hardened in their purpose, * and so collapsed in their wickedness.

Yet he looked on them in their distress, * listening to their cry.

He remembered his covenant with them, * and led them in his abounding kindness.

He granted them untold mercies * in the sight of all their captors.

Save us, Yahweh our God, * and gather us from among the nations,

that we may give thanks to your holy Name, * to be extolled by giving you praise.

Praised be Yahweh, the God of Israel, * from eternity to eternity! * and let all the people say, “Amen!”

Hallelu-Yah!
